Helga in all her feathered glory
Moussie, avec plumage
Moussie and Helga suffering the humiliation of early molting.
queen Kiki, all her feather intact
Kiki now contemplates a comb over.
Bertie, she's all feather and fowl.
I worried. I surmised they were either being bullied or molting. I expressed my concern to Ray. Smart man he is, he checked the literature and confirmed the molting conclusion. And since Moussie and Helga are the worst of the layers, they molt first. Kiki is the best layer and is suffering from a slight comb adjacent balding. Bertie, though a good layer, isn't nearly as prolific as Kiki but hasn't succumbed to the shed. She will soon enough, though.
I still worry, despite knowing this is nature's way, that the girls will be chilly or at the very least embarrassed. Perhaps I'll knit them cardigans to combat inclement weather.
